Just adding my two cents to the great reviews already here!

I saw this series when it was broadcast on Cartoon Network a few years ago, and I was hooked on it from the first episode! I’m not usually a fan of big robots that duke it out in the streets, but the characters and the visual style of this anime really drew me in. I’m a big fan of Art Deco (same reason I liked Batman: The Animated Series, which shares some of the same production staff), and this series is loaded with it, from the buildings, to the vehicles, to the film noir feeling that pervades the entire series.

Roger Smith is probably one of the smoothest cats in anime, yet even he gets blindsided every now and then by questions from his unflappable robot maid/ward/royal pain in the keister, R. Dorothy Wayneright.

Case in point: Roger and Dorothy are investigating the kidnapping of the son of a prominent Paradigm industrialist (in the episode, “Beck Comes Back”). Discussing the son’s parents, who met after losing their memories in the Event, Dorothy says she has two questions for Roger. The first one is, “Does losing your memory really make you that lonely?” Roger says it’s a tough question to answer, but makes a go of it, then asks Dorothy what the 2nd question is. “Forget it,” she says. “If you thought the last one was tough, this one is worse.” Dorothy is damaged in the battle to retrieve the industrialist’s son, and Roger asks Norman, his capable butler, to take care in repairing her so she can ask the question…and what is the question? “If you and I lost our memories, and we met, would we fall in love?” That one renders Roger speechless…

There are many such moments, as well as ones that speak a little too close to home, such as the dangers of genetic manipulation, nuclear holocaust, and evil that disguises itself as benevolence.

Luckily there is a second set of 13 episodes to help answer some of the questions raised by the first season! The voice acting is well done (you’ll hear familiar voices if you’re a fan of Cowboy Bebop) and the music is very cool. Enjoy!

This show will appeal to kids because of the excellent animation and robot battles, but it is of far more value to more mature minds, who can appreciate the religious allusions, symbolism, deep characterization, subtle yet epic plot line, and genuinely witty dialogue that this series displays. The voice acting is top notch and very well implemented. Roger Smith’s wry nature plays incredibly well off the characters he is always around such as (though not limited to): 1. Dorothy: a girlish female android who is genuinely hurt by Roger’s scathing comments regarding her “unfeeling” robotic nature. There is a certain ammount of romantic tension between these two, and Roger’s uncertainty makes their relationship awkward. 2. Norman: a butler who pretends to agree with everything he says, with a genuinely sarcastic nature 3. Angel: a completely mysterious free lance agent, who is always crossing Roger’s path. 4. Schwarzwald: an insane, suicidal maniac, who knows many secrets. I love how he and Roger interract, because it is only around this bandaged, ranting mad-scientist that Roger acts dead-pan and cold. Since they are rivals, its very interesting and realistic for Roger to hide his true emotions. It also makes a very stark contrast. The plot is too complex to explain here, so I will simply say that it has the best themes I’ve ever seen in a cartoon.

Colorado has an excess of wild mustangs. Rather than killing them, the rangers out there round them up in the hopes that people and organizations will adopt them. In order for them to do so, however, the horses have to be domesticated. Someone came up with the rather intelligent idea of having inmates at Colorado’s largest prison do some of the breaking work; not only does the State not have to do the work itself (or contract someone to do it at incredibly high prices), but the inmates get a marketable skill that’s well outside the usual skills with which people leave prison. While the program has not been an unqualified success on either end of the equation, it has still done wonders. The Wild Horse Redemption looks at this phenomenon by tracing a few weeks in the lives of some of the prisoners and the horses they work with during that time.

The thing that really struck me about this is how stripped-down a documentary it is compared to most of the stuff we get these days; there’s no attempt to delve into the past lives of any of the subjects (on either side of the law) beyond brief talks with them. The focus is on the present, the interaction of convicts and horses and how it transforms both. The documentary also doesn’t whitewash the fact that this is not a program for everyone; we witness one convict’s struggle to gain enough self-confidence to work with the horses over the course of the film. It is juxtaposed against the others, who all seem so comfortable around the animals they might as well have been born on them. It’s a constant reminder that this isn’t a cakewalk for these guys, and that was probably a necessary component to avoid this movie feeling like a rah-rah session.

Does have a few pacing problems here and there, but then many documentaries do. Good, solid filmmaking, though I’m guessing it’s probably less interesting to those who aren’t interested in horses. ***

This Documentary brought tears to my eyes!! A must see for every Mustang advocate!!!!!!!.. I hope they make another, and follow up on the men shown in the DVD… The BLM should offer this program to every prison that is capable of doing it…It could take a lot of the unwanted mustangs out of the Holding facilities…This Documentary is right up there with the Cloud Series….If not better, because it shows, in a very humane way that these men and horses are worth something!!

10 Things I Hate About You is a fairly basic teen love story, but with the added twist of Shakespeare and some good comedic acting.

The story is based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. It is about two sisters, one very popular, Bianca Stratford (played by Larisa Oleynik) and the other, Katrina, or “Kat” (played by Julia Stiles) hated because of her gruff character. Their overbearing father (played by the hilarious Larry Miller), devises a scheme whereby Bianca cannot date until rebellious Katrina does, which seems an impossibility. Thereby is set up a scheme to pair Katrina off with the roguish Patrick Verona. One of the masterminds of this plot is Cameron James (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a newcomer to Padua high, where the movie takes place. The other is his assistant of sorts, Michael Eckman (played by David Khumoltz).

Though somewhat predictable, especially if you have read Taming of the Shrew, it is an interesting light diversion. The dialogue is quite well done, intertwining a word or phrase from Shakespeare with modern teen slang. Other odes to Shakespeare are seen in Kat’s friend who idolizes him as if he is a teen heartthrob, plus reading of his works in one Kat’s classes. The timing in the dialogue is also very Shakespearean (for a comedy). It’s Very rapid fire. I think both David Khumoltz and Larry Miller are amazingly funny!

Overall, this is not your typical shallow teen romance movie, but can appeal to anyone who enjoys witty dialogue, and many literary references.

The DVD is unremarkable. It has a good DD 5.1 soundtrack driven by a nice selection of alternative rock – Letters from Clio had several cameos, but I believe they mainly played cover tunes, not their own stuff. The DVD does not contain any special features.

When I first saw previews for this movie, I thought that it looked alright, and that it was just another movie like Can’t Hardly Wait and She’s All That. Since I found those movies entertaining, I decided to watch it. When I finished the movie, I was completly blown away. The movie was nothing as I had expected it would be. The plot was so much better than all of those other teenage movies. This movie has everything: a good script, hysterical jokes, great acting, even a good soundtrack. Heath Ledger played Patrick Verona, a typical tough guy, and it’s so fun to watch his tough exterior dissapear to reveal a sensitive loving guy. Julia Stiles does a wonderful portrayal of Kat Stratford, a sarcastic teenage girl trying her hardest not to fit in. Her sister Bianca is also well cast, played by Larissa Olyenick. The contrast between these two sisters is hysterical. Cameron, a sweet guy, is played by Joesph Gordon-Levitt, and you can’t help but smile at his innocence (“She kissed me! …In the car!”)This movie follows the lives of these wonderful characters, and you will come to love each of them. Even all of the smaller parts are well acted and funny, such as the Stratford sisters uptight father, the hysterical guidance counselor Ms. Perky, and all of the other high school students. One of the best things about this movie is how true it is. Walk into any high school, and you will feel like you have just walked into Padua, their school. (“Those are your basic beautiful people…don’t talk to them unless they talk to you first.”) It is very rare to find a movie that has so much humor. Give this movie a chance, I’m glad I did…I could probably recite the whole movie by heart.

This film finally came out on DVD in a John Wayne collection. Yeah! It is a classic in the vein of the Fighting Kentuckian and Dakota alas without Vera Ralston but Ella Raines is great in her own right. Ward Bond is the heavy again and he does it with gusto. Personally, I have always liked this early classic and bought it immediately when it came out on DVD. I grew up on John Wayne and certainly like most of his early movies. If I had my choice between this one and Chisum, I would take this one in a flash. If you liked Angel and the Badman, you will like this one.

My DVD shelf is sagging with all the John Wayne movies on it, but when this was recently released I had to add it to the others.

When this movie was originally released I was going on 1 year of age. With all the westerns I saw growing up in the 1950s, I don’t recall ever seeing this one until a decade ago on TNT’s ole 4:00 p.m. daily westerns. I immediately went out and bought the VHS and viewed it many times over. As soon as my wife and I got home with the DVD a few days back we immediately viewed it, too. She is not much for westerns, but her comment after viewing TALL IN THE SADDLE for the first time was that it was a very good movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tall in the Saddle! Click Here

I’m partial to some of the earlier John Wayne movies before he became a ‘household name’, one in particular: BLUE STEEL. And I rate this movie, TALL IN THE SADDLE, just as good. I would give both BLUE STEEL and TALL IN THE SADDLE more than 5-stars if possible.

TALL IN THE SADDLE was made at a time when directors and actors knew how to make westerns, and this movie just has the feel of a very good one. Its excellence approaches STAGECOACH, an earlier John Wayne movie, that just barely surpasses both BLUE STEEL and TALL IN THE SADDLE.

So, if you like John Wayne westerns or just westerns in general, you can do no better than this one.

And George “Gabby” Hayes is at his best here, too. This is the first time I ever saw Ella Raines in a movie, and what an introduction to her. She is sensational as a gun-totin’ woman of the range.

Another item not to go unnoticed in this flick is the appearance of Raymond Hatton in the role a drunken friend of Gabby Hayes. If you look up Raymond Hatton you will see that he made more westerns than any other actor, and at one time was a box office draw right along side Bob Steele and Hoot Gibson. Another outstanding item in this movie is that of Paul Fix, long a John Wayne friend; Fix wrote the screen play for TALL IN THE SADDLE, and anyone familiar with the 1950s Rifleman on TV will certainly remember Mr. Paul Fix.

Enough of all this, go watch this sensational western picture from long ago, when they still knew how to make them.

Semper Fi.

Please do not let the reviewer who trashed the Pioneer English dub steer you from picking up this DVD. Once again, Pioneer has released another fine addition to the Lupin series, each one being funnier than the last.

For you NON-otaku who are thinking of skipping this one because of what was said about Pioneer’s dub cast, here’s what you need to keep in mind about some hardcore “otaku” anime fans…even if the dub was perfect, they’d find some reason to whine. Hence, reviews like the one below. Remember that before you take that review too much to heart. I listened to the English dub and the original Japanese track with an open mind and open ears, and I think Tony Oliver(Lupin), Lex Lang (Goemon), Richard Epcar(Jigen) and Michelle Ruff(Fujiko) did an excellent job! The only thing that threw me off are the modern day pop-culture references that have made their way into too many of Pioneer’s Lupin releases. But seeing how the original was made in the late 60′s and early 70′s, staying too close to the time period which it was made would have dated the series more than the animation has. But that’s a minor quibble in what is a fine series overall.

Oh, and if you ARE a “subs rule, dubs drool” anime fan, then let me clue you in…this edition, like all of the Pioneer Lupin series, comes with subtitles AND the original Japanese track. See? Everybody wins.

Lupin the thiiiiiiirrrrrrd!!!

Okay I will make this short and sweet, every episode on here is funny, the animation is clean and the sound is good. The only thing I do not like about the series so far is that they are not releasing the english versions of this in one set. This is the second season of Lupin, the funnier one, and there are over 100 episodes of it. I guess I will buy them until I see the english version of this in Box set. You could buy the Japanese sets also, but who wants to read the whole time.

I was prepared to be disappointed but hopeful that Universal would do a good job with this set. While it isn’t perfect, this collection of classic Hammer films (and some not so-classic ones as well)looks pretty good in this DVD transfer. Although “Brides of Dracula” and “Curse of the Werewolf” don’t look as stunning as the “Horror of Dracula” (or “Revenge of Frankenstein”)each appears in what appears to be the correct aspect ratio. Universal evidently used notes with the prints indicating the original theatrical aspect ratio (at least for the U.S.)much as Warner did with “The Mummy” and “Horror of Dracula”. There aren’t any extras to speak of but the image quality is solid. There’s grain evident in most of these DVD transfers but all of that can’t be attributed to the transfer itself as these were shot on stock that was grainy to begin with. Older DVD players (and some newer ones as well)may have a problem playing some of these discs. Evidently there are reports (again) that these Universal discs can cause some players to freeze and lock up the DVD players which is related to a manufacturing issue related only to dual layered discs. These discs would have looked terrific on single layered releases or on single sided dual layered releases. The reason these are being released like this is due to $$. Luckily, so far I haven’t had a problem but I thought the same thing with some of the other Universal releases and found out otherwise much later.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera! Click Here

“Brides of Dracula” has a misleading title. Dracula doesn’t appear at all instead this film focuses on Van Helsing’s (Peter Cushing) efforts to rid a village of a young vampire that has been inadvertantly released by a young woman. Although the script isn’t quite as strong as “Horror of Dracula”, the film has a number of memorable set pieces. Evidently beyond the four screenwriters credited, Anthony Hinds also had a hand in the script (as did Cushing and Fisher much later) as he had to tone down the film for the British censors prior to production. In Sangster’s original screenplay Dracula makes an appearence at the end of the film to punish Meinster. One of the last Hammer films shot by the marvelous Jack Asher, “Brides” looks great on DVD.

“Curse of the Werewolf” features Oliver Reed in the title role. Set in Spain, Reed plays Leon a young man adopted when his mother a mute servant girl dies giving birth. We know very little about the father except that the girl was raped. As a youth Leon exhibits the traits of the werewolf while hunting and the curse continues to haunt him as he grows older.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera! Click Here

The colors are bright and vivid. Terence Fisher’s direction is sharp as usual and the film is one of the more “adult” Hammer films dealing with a number of complex themes. Reed doesn’t show up until about 40 or so minutes into the movie. Featuring an unusual rich score by Benjamin Frankel(“Night of the Igauna”) and a chrismatic, powerful performance by Reed, “Curse” would be one of the few Hammer films to visit the legend of the werewolf. Bizarrely, Yvonne Romain plays Reed’s mother in this while Reed romances her in “Night Creatures”. Romain would have her last film role as Sheila in the classic mystery film “The Last of Sheila”.

“The Evil of Frankenstein” allowed Hammer to adapt Jack Pierce’s classic monster make up for this film when Universal agreed to finance it. Cushing plays the doctor once again. It’s one of the lesser Frankenstein films and the only one featuring Cushing not directed by Terry Fisher. While it isn’t the best of the Frankenstein films, Freddie Francis (cinematography on one of my favorite classic horror films “The Innocents” and other films such as “The Elephant Man”. Director of horror classics “The Creeping Flesh” and “The Doctor and The Devils”)does a solid enough job of directing the film despite it’s apparent low budget. “Evil” features one of the weakest scripts by Anthony Hinds for the “Frankenstein” series. Cushing does his best with the material. It’s basically a rehash of elements seen in many of the Universal Frankenstein films including the sequence where the Baron discovers his creature in ice (which echoes “Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman”). The transfer looks far from “Evil”. With nice, robust colors and nice fine line detail “Evil of Frankenstein” looks extremely good.

“Paranoic” features Oliver Reed in a clever thriller with as many plot twists as “Psycho”. Featuring a script by Jimmy Sangster and sharp direction by Freddie Francis, it’s a memorable thriller but derivative thriller. It doesn’t measure up to Hitchcock’s classic but has a number of marvelous sequences in it and a great performance by Oliver Reed. A very nice transfer with rich blacks, “Paranoic” and “Nightmare” (another Jimmy Sangster “Psycho” knock off of sorts) both look positively beautiful in this presentation.

“Phantom of the Opera” is Fisher’s remake of the classic French novel. In this version the Phantom is played by Herbert Lom. The make up isn’t as memorable as Lon Chaney’s and the changes in the plot along with the smaller scale of the production makes this one that gets overlooked. Although it wasn’t the huge financial hit that Universal had hoped at the time and the action lags a bit at the beginning, “Phantom” still remains a terrific bit of entertainment and has a number of marvelous set pieces directed by Terence Fisher.

“Kiss of the Vampire” may appear to familair to fans of Roman Polanski’s “The Fearless Vampire Killers”. The basic plot involving a vampire cult and their attempt to initiate an unsuspecting young woman at a “vampire ball” was the basis for Polanski’s satire. Well directed by Don Sharp, the main weakness of the film are the unconvincing bats that attack in one sequence. Otherwise, this is a top notch film. The transfer for “Kiss of the Vampire” looks quite good with rich colors.

“Night Creatures” is a Peter Cushing period piece that was retitled for the US market from “Captain Clegg”. Cushing plays the vicar in a town full of smugglers. Clegg was a pirate in the region who was ultimately caught, executed and buried in the town. Using “marsh phantoms” to scare away those who might be interested in their smuggling activities, the town is investigated when a man who had betrayed Clegg is found by the King’s Navy. This mute brute (Clegg had his tongue cut out for trying to rape the Captain’s wife and for betraying him)leads the King’s men to the town where it is suspected that Clegg might be alive and still in action after all. A well written period adventure, Cushing is marvelous as the vicar and a young Oliver Reed does a nice supporting turn in the film as well. The film is based on the same source as “Dr. Syn/The Scarecrow” which Disney made with Patrick Magoohan (famed for “The Prisoner” and “Secret Agent Man/Danger Man”)which forced Universal and Hammer to change the title and character names to avoid a lawsuit. Well directed by Peter Graham Scott with a breezy action filled script by Anthony Hinds, “Night Creatures” is a film I hadn’t seen since childhood. My impressions now (as they were then)is that this is a terrific piece of filmmaking showing a side of Hammer that was rarely investigated.

“Night Creatures” looks quite good although the sequences that set at night are a tad flat looking and dark. The colors are bright and vivid although the film looks like it could have been cleaned up a bit more for this presentation. Still, this DVD presentation of the film looks better than the rare VHS copies I’ve seen over the years. Part of the flaw with the film could be the age of the negative itself and/or the condition of it. It still looks mighty good all things considered.

The packaging resembles the other “Franchise” collections Universal has put out with a see through slipcase and images of the original lobby cards in small print on the inside. A nice job of putting this set together although, again, an extra disc with a biography of Cushing, commentary track from a Hammer film scholar (or fans)and the original theatrical trailers would have been appreciated.

Yep folks, I have to concur with other reviewers who have shouted BUYER BEWARE – just as Paranoiac gets interesting, the image freezes and completely locks up and all you can do is to make a note of the exact time on the DVD clock, then start the movie again using chapter stops to go PAST the lock-up, then reverse back to about 50 secs after the freeze occured … a wonderful carry-on for a suspense thriller, huh ? And ditto playing it on the computer – ever tried to eject a disc when your computer is frozen up ? The great tragedy is that these are wonderful, wonderful movies but the DVD quality is obviously a crap shoot (in fact some of those earlier reviews telling us how brilliant the disc quality is are highly suspect … but Universal would never stoop so low as to stuff the ballot now would they?) To those who have clean copies – well lucky you.

What I will say though is that no emails I have sent to Universal (“Contact Us” ! says their website) have been acknowledged, still less has anyone at Universal Customer Services (hah) offered refund or replacement or EXPLANATION AND APOLOGY. Service ? Heaven forfend ! We want your MONEY !

All the other reviewers who have complained so plaintively and angrily have my full support – now tell me, apart from Amazon’s willingness to replace defective discs, has ANYONE had any satisfactory contact with Universal ? And indeed has Amazon complained to Universal on our behalf ?

I can tell you one thing – the artwork on this collection’s digipak, that is actually embellished with a lobby card from the Claude Rains version of Phantom, only confirms what I already knew – BELIEVE ME the studios are full of career eager-beavers who haven’t a CLUE about any movies made more than ten years ago and even the recent ones had better be blockbusters with great opening weekends and great test screening responses or these superannuated adolescents who populate the Studios won’t have any idea what you’re talking about … Peter who ? …. Cushing? … what’s he done ? Should I know him ? Who’s his agent ?

I rest my case.

One thing nobody can deny is that in the short time the show has been around, Chappelle’s Show made it’s mark in pop culture.

In a nutshell, the first two seasons were absolutely hystical with a few sketches that weren’t as funny as the others (your not going to hit a homerun every single time) that just left classic moments in TV & pop culture history to the point where it revived the music career of a legend in Rick James with one catchphrase (I’M RICK JAMES B….) & helped another actor in Wayne Brady break out of the sterotypical roles he’s been typecasted in throughout his career (“Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a b….?”). Dave along with his cast like the always overlooked Charlie Murphy, legend Paul Mooney, and Donnell Rawlings just brought forth a bunch of situations that people don’t normally find funny but just made you almost pee on yourself laughing. It’s been years since the show started & so many memorable moments are still in my head like it was yesterday. It’s the funniest show of this nature since “In Living Color” that pushed the boundries with it’s spoofs of issues in recent news stories (R. Kelly….need I say more?), pop culture (Mad Real World) & issues we deal with daily like racism (Clayton Bigsby) & sterotypes (Trading Places)…and just having skits around to give us a good laugh (The Player Haters Ball & Tryone). The first two seasons were just comedic gold to me. The DVD extras with the deleted scenes/outtakes on both sets with alternative commentary along with the bonus standup, extra Charlie Murphy stories, and extended interviews from both Rick James & Charlie Murphy on disc two are an added & welcomed bonus.

I can’t say the same for the third or “lost season” & I just couldn’t believe that this is the same show that had me laughing, caught the attention of america, and everything else I mentioned earlier. These were “lost” episodes & honestly should have stayed lost because this season was awful. The only skits that had me laughing was the one about 2pac not being alive but having a song talking about everyone currently in that club & the one where everyone started charging Dave more money for things since they found out how much money he makes. They did show the controversal “pixie” sketch which I wasn’t offended by because I couldn’t get past how unfunny it was. The only thing that somewhat kept the shows watchable more than once is the audio commentary from Charlie, Donnell, and Niel (can’t remember his last name right now).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Chappelle’s Show – The Series Collection! Click Here

In the end, season one & two are worth this set but season three will be seen as a huge disappointment so if you can get seasons one & two cheaper than this box set, I would do that. Otherwise, everything about the first two seasons heavily overshadow the “lost episodes” so I would recommend overall under those conditions.

Great box. Just one minor thing there are no English subtitles. I am from The Netherlands and not a English native speaker so I really like it when a dvd has subtitles. I didn’t know before purchasing so keep this in mind when you order!

Other then that it’s a great box, great quality and already had lot’s of fun with friends watching it. WHAT? OKAY!

It’s kind of strange how I ended up buying Angel cop the collection. I had seen a commerical for this once that showed Angel taking her helmet off over and over again, because her partner was shocked to find out this his new partner was a tough, female cop (Angel). After seeing this cheesy commerical I thought that it something I definately didn’t want to waste my time or money on. Later on I saw a review for this series in an anime magazine it sounded interesting enough. The thing that made me finally decide to give it a chance was the length and at that time I was buying anime based on length hoping to get more for my money which is definately not a recommended strategy for purchasing anime. I was extermely lucky with this one.

This is one of the best cop shows in all of anime. There is plenty of story, action, violence, profanity, and interesting characters to satisfy any action-junkie. Also Angel’s ride was pretty phat!

The drawback is the dubbing. It wasn’t all that great. Some people did some extremely bad acting and when other people cursed it sounded forced.

Based on the amount of graphic violence, strong language, and nudity I would recommend this to mature viewers 17 and up.

A few people who have seen this movie will argue that it has no story, is too long, and drags violence on and on and on. This movie does have a plot, and a very good one at that. A branch of police called the special security force deals with terrorism in Tokyo. They stop the terrorists, but then find out that they are just a cover-up for a branch of government accepting money from an American company to dump waste in the rural regions of Japan. That is the background of the story. When watching this movie, be sure to pay attention. As for all of the violence that drags on and on, a lot of it can be best summarized with one word; disturbing. This movie can bring about a lot of disturbing moments, but you won’t be able to stop watching. As for length, it is good to see some anime longer than 40 minutes. All in all, after seeing this tape you most likely will not be able to stop thinking about it. The outcome is rather exciting. There will be moments where you will enjoy certain explosions, and others where you will say, “Why did that have to happen?”

i think the movie overall is very good if your into the whole samurai thing. i also think that the whole outlook of it was well planned out. it remines me of the book .in all good dvd

This anime has moved to the top three in my list of favorite animes. I love Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Big O, Armitage (all of them), Escaflowne, Rocord Of Lodoss, & many more. Demon Eyes Kyo is now tied at second place with Cowboy Bebop.
I absolutely loved each of the main characters. They had great humor and complete loyalty to one another.
I purchased the complete collection because of some happy reviews that I read. I had no idea what to expect and I fell in love with the series ten minutes into the first episode. It felt, somewhat, like watching the FOX TV series ’24′ in the fact that you just couldn’t get enough and had to keep watching to see what was going to happen next.
To me, it was completely worth every dollar spent. I wear my new ‘Samuri Deeper Kyo’ t-shirt with extreme pride!

Season seven of NBC’s long-running medical drama ER was an impressive collection of episodes that featured the introduction of one of the best guest star performances in the history of the show.

While she is not a regular cast member, Sally Field stole the show in season seven, guest starring as Maggie, nurse Abby Lockhart’s (Maura Tierney) bipolar mother. Field earned an Emmy for her incredible turn as Maggie, a woman desparately trying to reconnect with her daughter and turn her life around, all the while dealing with a disease that can turn her into a totally different person. Most of Abby’s story lines in this season revolved around her mother, and through that, viewers got a chance to learn just where Abby came from and how tough things were for her as a youngster. Abby is the only character in this season that is returning for the 14th season as a regular cast member, so it is nice to see just where the character got her start.

Abby began the year as a med student, but her ex-husband’s failure to pay a bill puts her back in nurse scrubs for the season, however, as the year draws to a close she is thinking about heading back to med school again. Viewers also get a chance to see Abby’s budding relationship with Dr. Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic), a relationship that has resulted in them having a baby and getting married in season 13. In this season, the relationship is still in its new stage and viewers got a chance to see just what Luka went through in Croatia, losing his wife and children in a bombing. It is through his relationship with a dying bishop (guest star James Cromwell) that Luka finally learns to deal with his past and move on with his life.

At the end of season six, Dr. John Carter (Noah Wyle) was heading to rehab after becoming addicted to pain pills. Season seven finds him out of rehab and looking for his job back. With conditions, he is accepted back to County General and for the most part, is able to blend back in with his fellow doctors. A close call with some pain medication sends him back to square one in his return to work, however. His close friendship with Abby, herself a recovering alcoholic, helps him through the tough times and we get to see the great side of Dr. Carter when he travels with Abby to bring a messed up Maggie back from a hotel room where she was holed up in Oklahoma.

Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq LaSalle) continues his relationship with pediatrician Cleo Finch (Michael Michele) and also has to deal with the fact that he loses his job in the surgery department after a tiff with Dr. Robert Romano (Paul McCrane). Forced to accept a position with no benefits and no stature, Benton is incredibly disappointed, but stays in Chicago to be near his son Reese, who splits time with he and his ex, Carla (guest star Lisa Nicole Carson). Eventually, Benton is hired as the director of diversity at the hospital in what would be he and Cleo’s final full season at County General. Both doctors departed near the end of season eight.

Jing-Mei Chen (Ming Na) opens the season finding out that she is pregnant. She hides her pregnancy well for a while, keeping her parents in the dark until it is almost time to deliver. She agrees to give the baby up for adoption after realizing that the time was not right for her and the fact that her parents couldn’t handle the fact that the baby’s father was black. The pregnancy was Chen’s main story line, though she does apply for chief resident at the end of the season, a position Carter also wants, but can’t have because of the conditions placed on him after his rehab stint.

Dr. Dave Mallucci (Erik Palladino) has very few large story lines in the season, serving mainly as a character in other people’s story lines. It is obvious in this season that the writers were dealing with a lot of main characters, which gave them almost too many stories to tell in each episode and Dr. Dave was one of the people that seemed to fall by the wayside.

Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes), the head of the ER, confronts her own sexuality, as she enters a relationship with Dr. Kim Legaspi (guest star Elizabeth Mitchell, Juliet from Lost). She hides their relationship well, but when Dr. Legaspi’s career is on the line, Weaver steps up and comes out of the closet to her boss, Dr. Romano. This story line was one of the big stories during the season, one that opened Dr. Weaver up to many relationships, including the one that led to her departure from the show in the middle of the 13th season.

But, the biggest story of the year was that of Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards). The longtime ER doc finds out that he has a tumor in his brain the same day he finds out that his girlfriend Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) is pregnant. The two set out on a course to find a way to treat the tumor and the removal is successful, but Greene has a hard time returning to work, still dealing with the effects of the surgery and the tumor. The two doctors get married (after a slight delay) and welcome Ella to the world and in the final episode, Greene fears for the life of his wife and baby when a distraught father goes on a killing spree after Greene places his son in a foster home. This tumor marked the beginning of the end for Dr. Greene, as its return in season eight eventually led to the good doctor’s death in the penultimate episode, one of the toughest moments in ER history.

This set features a number of deleted scenes and a great gag reel that shows just how much things can get screwed up on the set of a tense show like ER.

While there could’ve been more extras, this has been the norm the last few seasons and the episodes themselves make for great television, with or without the extras. If for no other reason, by this set to watch “The Visit,” the episode that introduces viewers to Sally Field’s Maggie, truly one of the best episodes of the show’s 14-year run.

This show just keeps getting better and better as the seasons are released. It starts getting into more detail about the personal lives of the doctors and nurses. This season is the season that starts the development of Dr. Greene’s brain tumor. I can’t wait until season 8 is released. This is real drama!
